The Expression of a High-Altitude Terroir in Ribera del Duero by the Torres Family
The estate
Founded in 1870 by brothers Jaime and Miguel, the Torres House is a true wine institution whose historical roots lie in Catalonia. Now led by Miguel A. Torres and his son Miquel Torres Maczassek, this internationally renowned family brand has expanded beyond its original lands. Notably, it cultivates around 1,000 hectares of Catalan vineyards while developing ambitious projects in Castile and León. Recognised for its deep environmental commitment, the estate blends tradition and innovation to craft wines that faithfully reflect their terroirs.
The vineyard
Located in the central-eastern part of the Duero basin, the vineyard for this cuvée in the Ribera del Duero appellation flourishes on the Fompedraza estate. The vines, planted at an impressive altitude ranging between 790 and 900 metres, benefit from a gentle relief of plateaus and narrow valleys, near the Duratón river. The soils stand out for their richness in carbonates, combining grey limestones and marls from the Upper Miocene with predominantly clay-rich soils from the Quaternary era.
The vintage
The year was marked by temperatures above the usual averages, along with a few summer heatwaves. While rainfall was overall lower than the previous year during the vegetative cycle, it saw a beneficial increase during the grape ripening phase, between August and September.
Winemaking and ageing
The making of Celeste Crianza 2022 begins with a skin maceration of 15 to 20 days, followed by an alcoholic fermentation of about a week in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperature (25 to 30 °C). Malolactic fermentation takes place with a high proportion of new barrels. After two months of ageing on the lees, the wine matures for 12 months in oak barrels (60% French and 40% American, of which 29% new wood). Finally, it rests for at least one year in the bottle before being released to market.
Grape variety
This Spanish wine is made from 100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo).
